In my studio work, I have been exploring the idea of landscape for several years. In 2005 I began splitting the foreground from the background and dividing plants into their parts. This led me to the idea of using landscape in three dimensions as an installation. While I was working through these ideas I also became interested in public art as a way to extend my concepts into a larger more permanent installation. My drawings for the terrazzo floor project at Adam Diaz Senior Center sprung from the Saguaro Cactus’ line and texture. I used parts of the plant, like the flowers, to define areas in the building. Another floor design was based on the images that pass below you when you are hiking or riding a horse across the desert floor. Similarly, the Bougainvillea piece for the Valley Metro Light Rail Northeast Extension was designed to incorporate the mature plants from an established neighborhood into the expanding light rail’s new line. Similarly, I designed enhancements to the Goodyear Community Park that combined imagery of local wildlife with Egyptian symbols and motifs that call out the city’s namesake and agricultural heritage as a producer of Egyptian cotton used in Goodyear airplane tires. All of the above public art projects were informed by community interaction and input as well as interfacing with municipal planners, public art specialists, architects and engineers.
In addition to my permanent public art projects, I have designed and produced temporary installations for public spaces. The elements of light, reflection and transparency along with the scalability of digital reproduction are all fixtures in my artist’s toolbox. “Wild Flower Current,” commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art was created by integrating groupings of illuminated botanical elements into the existing landscaping along the banks of the Scottsdale Waterfront. While “Wild Flower Current” entailed elements native to the desert floor, “Wild Flower Hawks,” an installation commissioned by the City of Goodyear as a part of IN FLUX Projects, gave me an opportunity to take to the skies. In activating a storefront in downtown Goodyear, Arizona, my concept was to capture the movement of Red Tailed Hawks flying in a colorful sky.
My direction in public art continues to expand as I venture into new materials, products, and projects. However, the core of my work will always remain rooted in drawing and exploring ways to extend graphic imagery into three-dimensional formats and unexpected spaces.

I am working on a two and three dimensional installation focusing on the terrain of the State of Arizona and its relationship to extraterrestrial discoveries that were developed here. I am creating a landscape incorporating botanical, geological and landscape elements from Earth along with satellite imagery from the exploration of Mars and Pluto. Both planets have ties to the state due to the combination of dark skies and our geology. Pluto was discovered at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff and both ASU and the U of A were involved in the exploration of Mars.
My working process is influenced by my experience and interaction with the world around me. I use two and three-dimensional formats in order to take a holistic approach to landscape, employing traditional drawing techniques and more experimental sculptural drawings. I capture landscapes on walls and on paper, and I also create landscapes using 3D installations of cylindrical tubes, ceramic pots, LED-illuminated plastics, adhesives, and hanging sculptures. A two-dimensional drawing of a mountain on a gallery wall, for example, is foregrounded by three-dimensional cacti and cloud sculptures, illuminated by LED lights and optical fiber. Some of the textures found in my work are drawn by hand, others are created on the computer using cut-and-pasted features from geologic and topographic maps.
I produce layered, linear works that relate the terrains of the desert and outer space. I use botanical imagery of plants collected around my studio in Phoenix and also from the Herbarium at ASU where I can photograph pressed plant specimens from the locations where the planetary discoveries were made. I will be layering images from satellite photography both as hand drawings and digital images, which will be composed in the computer. The focus will be on the similarities of surface and texture between images of Earth, Pluto and Mars from a distance and images of the plants at close range. An ongoing concern for me is the relationship between space and detail in the environment, and this concern is a guiding motivation for this exploration. I will be creating a connection between conventional landscape formats in art and the perspectives offered by the study of planets and outer space. I will use the botanical elements to connect the experience of the planetary researcher with the sense of physical place from which the scientific research originated and to the physical world of the viewer.

As an artist I find the physical act of drawing on a computer screen not unlike drawing on a lithography stone or plate. Additionally computer generated drawing provides an artist with expansive tools and a depth of possibilities for color, line and scale. It enables me to create art that can exist in unexpected formats. At this point in my work, the conventional tools and techniques of drawing meet the new digital tools of drawing. They meet as I merge intricately hand-drawn images created for computer use with images drawn in the computer with a digital pen. My background of creating drawings using traditional drawing and printmaking tools informs my digital work as does the computer inform my hand drawn work. I want the intimacy and precious nature of drawing to also be reflected in my digital work.
